4M Ranch is dedicated to raising cutting horses and cattle the old-fashioned way -- in a spacious natural environment near Baird, in the heart of Texas’s “big ranch” country.

In the late 1800's, as cattle drives moved westward across Texas, small settlements sprang up along the trail to provide cowboys with provisions. Later when the railroads forged through, these settlements became permanent. Baird, established in 1880, was named after a director of the Texas and Pacific Railway.

Meredith McCullar, a Tennessee native and award-winning real estate developer, fostered a love for Quarter Horses and the Western lifestyle as a young man, when he competed in rodeo events. Later, when he designed and built a ranch house on the Double Mountain River Ranch that he owned with the legendary cutting horse trainer Buster Welch, McCullar became interested in cutting.

“We would go to the ranch and Buster would put me on those good horses he had,” McCullar remembered. “When you’re around Buster you absorb so much because he’s always teaching you something.

One of the things McCullar learned from Welch was an appreciation for a true cowhorse. One of his first purchases, after he establish 4M Ranch, was Quixote Lena Peppy, bred by another famous horseman and rancher, John Scott of Miles City, Texas.

McCullar rode Quixote Lena Peppy to win the NCHA Super Stakes Amateur division in 1998, less than two years after he started riding cutting horses. “She is such a great horse,” he said, “Back then, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. I’d just get on her and kick and she was so good, she’d just go and do what she was supposed to do.”

Quixote Lena Peppy and Playgiarism, mother of Duals Play Kit, earner of $250,000, established a benchmark for superior genetics and outstanding performance, that is the cornerstone of the 4M breeding program.
